Welbodi Partnership works to build the capacity of the health system in Sierra Leone, West Africa, to reduce the number of women and children who are sick, suffer or die unnecessarily.

Just over half (54%) of deliveries occur in health facilities; more than 2 in 5 births occur at home.

One in every 11 Sierra Leonean children dies before reaching their first birthday, and one in every seven does not survive to his or her fifth.

Vaccination coverage has increased in Sierra Leone, from 40% in 2008 to 68% in 2013; Just over two-thirds of Sierra Leonean children age 12-23 months are fully vaccinated.

WHO recommends that children receive nothing but breastmilk for the first six months of life. Only one-third (32%) of children under six months in Sierra Leone are being exclusively breastfed.

Sierra Leone is situated on the West Coast of Africa and is bordered by Guinea and Liberia. There is an estimated population of nearly 7.1 million people, approximately 40% of whom reside in the coastal capital of Freetown and surrounding urban conurbations.

The country has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world with 1,165 deaths per 100,000 live births, 6 times the global average and one of the highest child mortality rates in the world with 156 deaths per 1,000 live births of children under 5 years.

The health workforce is a crucial component in delivering high quality, affordable, and accessible health care services. The ability of a country to meet its health goals depends largely on the knowledge, skills, motivation, and deployment of the people responsible for organising and delivering health care services.

Welbodi Partnership works with Ola During Children’s Hospital and Princess Christian Maternity Hospital, both tertiary hospitals in Freetown. We also support a maternal healthcare programme across the country, helping healthcare workers to identify women who need escalation of care.
